Nationwide Events Steer Students
Toward Booming Aging Industry
The aging of America’s population is resulting
in a shortage of people trained to meet the unique needs of older adults. To
close this gap, the University of Vermont is gearing up for Careers
in Aging Week, which will take
place from April 6 to 12, 2014. The event is an annual joint venture between The
Gerontological Society of America and its educational branch, the Association
for Gerontology in Higher Education.
UVM’s Careers in Aging Week
activities will provide important information about the wide range of
professions in the field of aging and aging research, raise awareness about
older populations and their needs, and inform students and the public of the
many academic programs available to get one started on a career path.
Americans 65 and
older now constitute about 13 percent of the population, according to the
federal government’s Administration on Aging, and that figure is expected to increase
to 19 percent — 72 million — by 2030. This demographic transition is resulting
in a shortage of people trained to meet the unique needs of these older adults,
and the array of industries that will be affected is quite diverse.
UVM is proud to bring Careers in
Aging Week, celebrated by dozens of institutions across the country, to the Burlington community. Consisting of innovative skits by the Saavy Seniors and panel of professionals in the aging field, this endeavor expects to draw a range of participants, including students,
community groups, businesses, teachers, and others.
Come join us for UVM's Careers in Aging event on Wednesday, April 9th from 5:30 - 7:00 PM in Waterman's Memorial Lounge. Refreshments provided.
